The comments from McLaren about prioritizing the Constructors’ Championship didn’t sit well with Jacques Villeneuve, who openly criticized the British team.
The Brazilian GP likely extinguished any remaining title hopes for Lando Norris. Starting from pole while Max Verstappen began in 17th, the Briton finished sixth as his rival stormed to a historic comeback victory. The gap between them now stands at 62 points, and with only three races left, Norris would need nothing short of a miracle to turn the tables.
On the other hand, McLaren leads the Constructors’ standings. The MCL38 has proven to be the fastest car overall this season, reflected in the team’s dominance in the championship.
“Nobody cares about the Constructors’ Championship”
After the weekend in Brazil, the Woking team reiterated that the Constructors’ title was their primary focus. However, this perspective is far from shared by Jacques Villeneuve.
“McLaren said the strangest thing after Brazil—that the team’s priority wasn’t the Drivers’ Championship but the Constructors’,” said the 1997 World Champion to Grosvenor Sport – “That’s very odd. This is what teams who don’t win say. Sure, the Constructors’ title brings in money, but nobody cares about it. People only remember who the Drivers’ Champion is.”
“There have been several occasions this year where they could have supported Lando instead of treating their drivers equally. The Constructors’ title looks good on paper and brings in extra cash, but outside the team itself, no one truly cares. To me, this shows that they haven’t really done much to help Lando this season.” – the former Formula 1 world champion concluded.
