Singapore sparks McLaren tension: “papaya rules” under pressure
McLaren celebrated its second consecutive constructors’ championship, secured at the Singapore Grand Prix, but behind the celebrations, tensions flared between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Martin Brundle anticipates changes to the “papaya rules” and how the team manages its drivers following the constructors’ title confirmation.
McLaren dominates in Singapore
McLaren was the standout team at the Singapore Grand Prix. The results achieved over the weekend were crucial in securing back-to-back constructors’ championships. However, growing tension between the drivers following the first-lap clash captured the spotlight and drew attention away from the victory.
“This isn’t very team-oriented,” Oscar Piastri reportedly said over the radio to his engineer, expressing his frustration with the internal dynamics.
Martin Brundle expects a shift in the “papaya rules”
Former F1 driver and respected commentator Martin Brundle believes McLaren will adjust its well-known “papaya rules,” which govern driver behavior and team management.
Martin Brundle suggests that now, having secured their primary objective in the constructors’ championship, the Woking team may ease restrictions and allow Norris and Piastri to battle freely. He explained, “With the constructors’ goal achieved, it suggests that McLaren could relax the rules and let the drivers decide the rest of the title fight themselves. Perhaps the team should now let both drivers compete without interference. Any serious fallout will be mitigated by the need to finish races, score points, avoid FIA penalties during events, prevent Max Verstappen from overtaking both, and manage without the latest parts as the team focuses on 2026.”
With the 2025 season nearing its conclusion and the rivalry between Norris and Piastri still unresolved, it remains to be seen whether McLaren will finally grant its drivers more freedom, avoiding yet another team order scenario.
