David Coulthard reveals what sets Lewis Hamilton apart from Formula 1’s all-time greats. David Coulthard has expressed admiration for Lewis Hamilton’s uncanny ability to avoid incidents.

Lewis Hamilton, 2024 F1

Lewis Hamilton stands as one of the most celebrated drivers in Formula 1 history, with a record that speaks for itself. His remarkable achievements place him among the sport’s elite, and should he secure an eighth world title with Scuderia Ferrari, he could solidify his status as the greatest driver of all time. Hamilton’s legacy is built not only on his victories but also on his ability to thrive across multiple teams, showcasing his talent through actions on the track rather than words.

Unlike many of Formula 1’s legends, Hamilton has managed to steer clear of the controversies and incidents that have defined the careers of others. From Ayrton Senna’s infamous clash with Alain Prost at Suzuka to Michael Schumacher’s collision with Jacques Villeneuve at Jerez, and Max Verstappen’s numerous battles with rivals, the sport’s history is filled with high-profile altercations.

Lewis Hamilton, however, has been an anomaly in this regard. Reflecting on his career, former F1 driver David Coulthard has expressed admiration for Lewis Hamilton’s uncanny ability to avoid such incidents. This distinctive quality sets him apart, further reinforcing his reputation as a driver who excels not just through speed and skill but also through remarkable composure under pressure.

“I’ve seen from Lewis he’s a very clean racer,” he told The Red Flags Podcast. “He manages to keep out of a lot of controversy through his career. He’s the sort of anomaly in that group of villains. I think there was a comfortable period there where they had car advantage, and he’s an exceptional driver. It doesn’t diminish the results he’s had, but of course, when he has gone wheel to wheel with Max, normally Max has come out in front.”

Can the British driver achieve further glory in the years ahead? The road ahead presents a unique challenge for the seven-time world champion as he embarks on a new chapter in his career, relocating to Italy and joining a completely different team. This marks uncharted territory for Lewis Hamilton, who has spent the majority of his Formula 1 journey with only two teams.

Adapting to a new language, a new car, and an entirely new environment, Lewis Hamilton will face a teammate who has spent six seasons mastering the intricacies of the team and its systems. Overcoming these obstacles to claim an elusive eighth world title would cement his legacy as the sport’s ultimate icon—potentially signaling the perfect moment for retirement.

While tying with Michael Schumacher on seven titles may not weigh heavily on his mind, Hamilton’s 2024 campaign with Mercedes showed signs of wear, suggesting that his prime might be waning. His move to Ferrari in 2025 comes with high expectations but also significant uncertainties.

To contend with the likes of Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, or Lando Norris in the coming seasons, Lewis Hamilton will likely need not just his enduring skill and determination but also a car capable of delivering consistent results—and perhaps a touch of fortune. Whether he can surmount these challenges remains to be seen, but if anyone is capable of defying the odds, it’s Lewis Hamilton.
