Luigi Mazzola commented on the recent United States Grand Prix during the Sky Race Anatomy show, focusing particularly on the result and performance of McLaren driver Lando Norris, who would have needed a much better outcome in order to continue challenging Max Verstappen in the battle for the Formula 1 Drivers’ title.
Luigi Mazzola’s comments
Here are the statements from the former Ferrari engineer: “The weakest part of Norris was the race. He made a mistake at the start, but during the race, he held back until a certain point, and only then did he start to push. Put yourself in Max Verstappen‘s shoes: if the engineer told him [as they did with Norris, ed.] to stay calm and not push, he would see the race differently.” – the former Ferrari team member pointed out at the end of the United States Grand Prix in Austin
“He should know that he can push, that the tires aren’t a problem. So why is he staying there?” he added.
Luigi Mazzola also spoke about McLaren’s performance: “I think, once again, they weren’t excellent in managing the race. They were too conservative. I don’t understand why they didn’t push at the beginning. Apparently, they were focused on beating Verstappen, but they should have aimed to win.” – he continued.
Finally, speaking about Lando Norris’ “world championship chances,” he said: “His chances are shrinking, especially because Max had a great race. If they [Norris and McLaren, ed.] keep performing like this [as in Austin, ed.], they probably won’t go anywhere,” Luigi Mazzola concluded.
And you, what do you think? Do you agree with the Italian engineer’s analysis?
