Former F1 world champion criticizes Lando Norris’ “unnecessary” Yas Marina team radio comments. Nico Rosberg Questions Lando Norris’ Post-Race Declaration.

Lando Norris, McLaren MCL38, 2024 F1

Lando Norris capped off a demanding 2024 season in style by clinching victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last weekend. Dominating the field from start to finish, Norris converted his pole position into a commanding win, securing McLaren’s first Constructors’ Championship title since the late 1990s.

The pole was Norris’ eighth of the year, matching the tally of world champion Max Verstappen. However, his race performances have often fallen short of his qualifying prowess. Criticism, including Lewis Hamilton’s jabs at his inconsistent starts, has highlighted this shortcoming. Yet, at Yas Marina, Norris executed a flawless getaway, setting the stage for a measured and controlled race. He ultimately crossed the finish line nearly six seconds ahead of Carlos Sainz.

Oscar Piastri’s first-corner spin, following contact with Verstappen, left Norris carrying the weight of McLaren’s hopes. Despite both Ferraris in pursuit, Norris maintained composure, delivering a pivotal victory for the team.

Reflecting on his season, Norris may take pride in his four race wins, especially considering Red Bull’s dominance in 2023. Still, he’ll spend the winter pondering missed opportunities. While Verstappen outperformed him with nine victories from eight poles, Norris could only achieve half as many wins—a statistic that underscores the gap between the two drivers this season.

Nico Rosberg Questions Norris’ Post-Race Declaration

Despite his achievements, Norris remains without the ultimate prize—a world championship. Following his victory, he took to the team radio to declare, “Next year’s going to be my year too.” With McLaren entering 2025 as favorites due to stable regulations, optimism abounds. However, 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg has cautioned that such statements could create undue pressure.

Rosberg, reflecting on his own experiences, noted that while internal confidence is vital, publicly managing expectations is equally crucial. Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 podcast, he explained that projecting a more measured tone might serve Norris better. Rosberg credited this mindset as a key factor in his ability to overcome Hamilton during their fierce rivalry at Mercedes.

Even if Norris never claims the championship, his efforts alongside Piastri have cemented his legacy within Formula 1. Together, they ended McLaren’s decades-long title drought, etching their names in the annals of the sport. Still, Norris’ focus remains fixed on achieving his ultimate goal, and the journey continues into 2025: “In Abu Dhabi, on the cool-down lap, he said in the car ‘next year’s my year’. That’s something that I would actually recommend him not to do. Because it’s just an unnecessary pressure, expectation dynamic that you kick-off. If you want, do it internally, but especially not externally. That was one of the keys to me winning my world championship actually.” – the former Formula 1 driver explained.

Lando Norris’ Message to Max Verstappen Hints at a Key Shift Needed for 2025

Martin Brundle has observed that Lando Norris appears “extremely comfortable” when leading a Grand Prix. Of his four victories this season, three were commanding from start to finish, with his maiden win in Miami standing out as the lone exception.

However, the battle for next year’s championship may come down to how Norris handles adversity. In hindsight, there were several instances where he could have chipped away at the 63-point deficit to world champion Max Verstappen.

Following his Abu Dhabi triumph, Norris took to social media to thank Verstappen after the reigning champion congratulated McLaren on their success. The exchange highlighted the amicable relationship between the two drivers, despite their burgeoning rivalry on the track.

Yet, this camaraderie might also be a hindrance. If Norris truly wants to dethrone Verstappen and end his dominant four-year reign, he may need to adopt a more confrontational approach. Challenging Verstappen more aggressively could disrupt the Dutchman’s rhythm and create opportunities, even if it risks straining their personal rapport.

Building a successful championship campaign often requires mental as well as on-track battles. If Norris can rattle Max Verstappen’s composure, it might provide the edge needed to shift the balance of power. The question remains whether Norris is prepared to take that step and embrace a more ruthless demeanor heading into 2025.
