Robert Shwartzman will be on track during FP1 of the Mexican Grand Prix with Sauber. Is he also on Mattia Binotto’s list for a seat in 2025?
The Mexican GP weekend will feature several “rookies” during FP1. In addition to Kimi Antonelli, Ollie Bearman, and Felipe Drugovich, Robert Shwartzman will also take to the track with Sauber, aiming to stake his claim for a seat in 2025.
The Russian driver returns to the car after participating in the free practice sessions at Zandvoort. In Mexico City, he will replace Guanyu Zhou in the session that officially opens the 20th weekend of the season.
“Once again, our partnership with Scuderia Ferrari continues, providing opportunities for young drivers to take part in free practice sessions. We send our best wishes to Robert,” reads the social media statement from Sauber.
Is Robert Shwartzman also on Mattia Binotto’s radar?
The session in Mexico City will be an opportunity that Robert Shwartzman will need to make the most of. Mattia Binotto has not yet decided who will partner Nico Hulkenberg in 2025, and the list of candidates seems to be growing. In addition to the dream of signing Franco Colapinto, which seems difficult due to his ties with Williams, the former Team Principal is also keeping an eye on both Mick Schumacher and Gabriel Bortoleto.
Robert Shwartzman might soon be added to this list as he sees Sauber as his only chance to secure a seat in F1 for 2025. Despite excellent performances in the tests he participated in, Ferrari’s reserve driver has not yet had a chance to showcase his talent at the highest level after leaving Formula 2.
If he proves to be very fast in Mexico City, it is likely that Mattia Binotto will start considering him for next year.
