Max Verstappen, who started in second position, managed to “survive” the chaos of turn one, where both he and Lando Norris went off track, while Charles Leclerc overtook everyone to take the lead. The Red Bull driver then maintained his position against an aggressive Carlos Sainz, at least until he pitted, allowing the Spaniard to pass.
In the final stages of the race, Lando Norris began closing in on Verstappen, who was struggling with his worn tires. Despite a six-lap difference in tire wear, the reigning world champion defended brilliantly, holding off his rival lap after lap. Eventually, however, Lando Norris managed to pass Verstappen, overtaking him off track at turn 12. As a result, he was given a five-second penalty, which dropped him to third place on the podium.
Speaking about the United States Grand Prix, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner congratulated Scuderia Ferrari on their victory at the Circuit of the Americas but also expressed confusion over the lack of race pace after the impressive speed shown during Saturday’s Sprint. Here are his comments.
Christian Horner on the American race
Christian Horner said after the race: “First of all, I must congratulate Ferrari, who had a great race from the start and deserved their victory. As for us, we lost pace compared to yesterday, so we need to analyze and understand this aspect.”
When asked about the incident between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, Horner Christian remarked: “They limited us at the front rather than the rear. The lap changed, and I’m not sure if it was due to temperature or a setup change we made after the Sprint. As I said, we’ll need to investigate.” – the Red Bull team principal pointed out.
“Max drove excellently today; he defended well. There was an issue at the end of the race, but the rules are very clear on this situation, and the stewards acted quickly, as all the teams requested. Overall, there are many positives to take from today. The team did a good job of turning things around compared to Singapore, but there’s still a long way to go.” – he added.
The Briton concluded by saying: “Gaining five points over our main rival in the Drivers’ Championship this weekend is fine! Now we look ahead to Mexico, Checo’s home race, where we hope to build on what we achieved here and keep pushing in the right direction.” – Christian Horner concluded.
