Celebration ruined
The 400th GP of his career was supposed to be a true celebration for Fernando Alonso, as well as an opportunity for the 43-year-old Spaniard to commemorate this milestone with a potential points finish behind the wheel of the Aston Martin. Instead, contrary to his most coveted goals, the Mexican Grand Prix weekend ended before the checkered flag, especially after facing various difficulties both on and off the track.
Cause of the retirement
Following some health issues encountered on Thursday, which fortunately were resolved, the former Renault, McLaren, and Ferrari driver ended his race prematurely on lap 13 due to technical problems: “We took advantage of a chaotic start, and everything was under control from our side as we battled just outside the top ten,” he explained. “However, on lap 13, the brake temperature was a bit high, and unfortunately a few laps later we had to retire the car. I felt a lot of affection this weekend, with many nice messages and respect from the people. Despite the result, I have a positive feeling about the weekend and I am confident that I can achieve better performances in Brazil.” – the Spaniard pointed out.
Still without points
At Interlagos, Aston Martin will try to bring home a point during the American tour, in which it has not yet secured a top-ten finish with either Fernando Alonso or Lance Stroll (at least so far). The latter is also still seeking a top-10 finish that has eluded him since the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring circuit: “Today was a very competitive race,” the Canadian, who finished 11th, explained. “We did everything possible while managing some cooling issues, but we still lack the pace to fight for points. It has been two difficult weeks, but we hope to be a bit more competitive in Brazil.” – the Spanish driver concluded at the end of the Mexico City Grand Prix.
