Tension rises
“I won’t change my driving style; next time, I’ll have someone bring me something to drink in the pits.” Three-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen left Mexico without dwelling too much on the 20 seconds of penalties he received for two different infractions that occurred within a few hundred meters at the 4.304-kilometre Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City.
In Turn 4, he pushed Lando Norris off the track, and in Turn 7, he overtook him outside the limits of the track without giving the position back. In particular, the first infraction was also penalized with two points on his license in addition to the 10 seconds of penalty.
Max Verstappen is now at 6 points out of a maximum of 12 before a race ban is triggered, a possibility that already occurred this year with Kevin Magnussen, who had to miss the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit after reaching 12 penalty points in a calendar year. With the championship at stake, Max Verstappen cannot afford to miss a race from now until Abu Dhabi.
