Christian Horner has once again become one of the hottest topics in the Formula 1 paddock. According to the Daily Mail, Aston Martin has made a fresh attempt to convince the former Red Bull team principal to take charge of the Silverstone-based outfit and help reverse what has so far been a hugely disappointing 2026 campaign.
Lawrence Stroll, Aston Martin’s billionaire Canadian owner, has reportedly admired Horner for quite some time. The businessman is said to have tried to bring him to the team several months ago, coming close to reaching an agreement before negotiations ultimately collapsed at the final stage. This latest approach underlines just how determined Stroll is to reshape the team by adding one of Formula 1’s most accomplished and successful leaders.
Despite massive financial investment and the construction of state-of-the-art facilities, Aston Martin has endured an extremely difficult season. The British team has scored just a single point from the opening eight Grands Prix, a disappointing return that has intensified the search for someone capable of leading a major turnaround.
Christian Horner’s position
Christian Horner is in no rush to return to Formula 1 after leaving Red Bull exactly one year ago under controversial circumstances. Having reportedly received a substantial departure package worth around £80 million, he has the freedom to carefully evaluate every opportunity before deciding on his next move.
At the same time, Horner has hinted that he still has “unfinished business” in Formula 1, suggesting that a return to the championship remains a very real possibility.
A move to Aston Martin’s Silverstone headquarters would also reunite him with Adrian Newey, the legendary technical designer with whom he shared two decades of success at Red Bull. Newey has already joined Aston Martin, and a renewed partnership between the two could become one of the strongest foundations of the team’s long-term project.
Other options remain on the table
Aston Martin is not the only possibility Horner is considering. Former Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone reportedly approached Ferrari‘s senior management to recommend his long-time friend as a potential future team principal, although that proposal did not gain any traction.
Horner has also explored the possibility of acquiring a stake in Alpine alongside a group of investors. The opportunity arose after private equity firm Otro Capital signalled its willingness to sell its 24% shareholding in the French team.
An even more ambitious idea involves creating an entirely new Formula 1 team from scratch. Initial discussions have reportedly taken place with Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD, although a project of that scale would require at least five years before it could realistically become a reality.
So far, Christian Horner has made no public comment regarding Aston Martin’s latest approach. The team has also remained tight-lipped, with a spokesperson simply reiterating its long-standing policy of not commenting on rumours or speculation.
For now, the situation remains fluid. Horner continues to carefully weigh up the various opportunities available before making a decision that could define the next chapter of one of the most successful management careers in Formula 1 history.
