Wolff’s confidence in the Russell–Antonelli pairing
During the Autosport Business Exchange in New York, Toto Wolff explained the reasons Mercedes decided to rely on young Andrea Kimi Antonelli as Lewis Hamilton’s successor. According to the Austrian team principal, George Russell’s presence was key in turning what seemed like a risky move into a carefully considered decision.
“There was a lot of excitement around Lewis leaving and Kimi arriving,” Toto Wolff said, “but I never saw it as a dangerous choice, because with George we had absolute certainty.” Confirming the Russell–Antonelli duo for 2026 has removed any doubts about the future of the Brackley team, marking a new phase of internal stability.
Russell, a solid cornerstone
George Russell, who secured two Grand Prix victories in 2025, continues to demonstrate that he is one of the most reliable drivers on the grid. Toto Wolff highlighted that the British driver has often been underestimated due to a more reserved personality compared to Lewis Hamilton. “Perhaps he doesn’t get the attention he deserves, but his talent speaks for itself,” Wolff added, emphasizing that Russell is the cornerstone of Mercedes’ future.
Antonelli under pressure but ready to grow
For Kimi Antonelli, his 2025 debut represented a challenging yet promising development path. Wolff acknowledged that the young Italian had to face a significant technical and psychological challenge, adapting to ground-effect cars, difficult tires, and tracks entirely new to him. “We knew the first year would be demanding,” Wolff explained, “and in Italy the pressure is enormous: they’ve been waiting for a world champion for decades.”
Despite these challenges, Antonelli has already shown flashes of his talent, securing a pole in the Miami Sprint and a podium in Montreal. For Wolff, these results prove that backing him is the right long-term decision. “We’ve learned a lot about how to protect him in the media and help him grow calmly,” he stated.
Looking ahead to 2026
Looking to the next season, Toto Wolff is confident that Kimi Antonelli will return to the track more mature, aware, and competitive. “The last races have shown clear improvement. Next year he will be able to perform at his best, and I believe it will be a very positive season,” he concluded.
