The Singapore incident: sparks between friends
Lando Norris returns to the track for the nineteenth round of the season, but he will need to watch his back against Max Verstappen. The tension dates back to Singapore qualifying, where the McLaren driver reportedly disrupted the Red Bull champion’s flying lap, causing notable frustration for his engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase. Max Verstappen, who missed pole position by just 0.182 seconds to George Russell, made his feelings clear after qualifying: “Some people take it easy out there… it will be remembered.” Although he didn’t name anyone, the reference was obvious. Spoken in the heat of the moment, the comment indicated that the Dutchman had not forgotten the slight, even if both insist they are friends off the track.
Verstappen doesn’t forget
The situation was further explained by former F1 driver Robert Doornbos, who said Max Verstappen perceived the incident as intentional: “He saw the McLaren ahead and immediately knew who it was. In qualifying, every millisecond counts, and the dirty air ruined his lap. When Max says ‘noted and remembered,’ it means he won’t let it slide.” Verstappen has often shown that friendship stops at the pit wall: last year, he didn’t hesitate to battle fiercely with Norris in Austria and Austin, even making contact. In Singapore, he limited himself to keeping the Englishman in check at the start, finishing second behind Russell, but the sense is that this rivalry is only just beginning.
The championship remains in balance
With Oscar Piastri 22 points ahead and Max Verstappen trailing by 41, Lando Norris finds himself in a delicate position. The three-time world champion, even outside the direct title fight, could play a decisive role in determining who becomes the next champion. Max Verstappen has nothing to lose and, as always, races only to win. For Norris, the Austin weekend represents a double challenge: chasing Piastri while keeping a highly motivated Verstappen at bay. After the events in Singapore, the message is clear: “You better watch out.”
