George Russell proud to stay with Mercedes, but Max Verstappen still looms. George Russell expresses pride in continuing with Mercedes.

George Russell, Mecredes W16, 2025F1

George Russell commented on the official confirmation of his contract extension with Mercedes. While the one-year renewal secures his future for 2026, it does not erase the looming threat of Max Verstappen.

George Russell renews with Mercedes

For the tenth consecutive year, George Russell will remain a “Mercedes man.” The British driver will take the wheel of the W17, the team’s next car, continuing his long-standing relationship with Mercedes, which began in 2017. Russell hopes to lead the team to success under the new regulations.

George Russell cannot hide his pride in renewing with the team that launched his Formula 1 career, and he is eager to tackle the challenges of 2026 alongside Kimi Antonelli, who has also been confirmed by Toto Wolff for the upcoming season.

George Russell’s words

“I’m really proud to continue our journey together. Next year will mark my tenth anniversary since signing with Mercedes in 2017. It has been a long and successful partnership so far, and I’m looking forward to what the future holds, especially as we face one of the biggest regulatory changes in the history of this sport. We are all incredibly focused on making it a success and, for my part, building on what has been my best season in F1 so far,” said the #63.

Looking toward 2027

George Russell will need to build on his standout 2025 season, which included two pole positions converted into victories in Montreal and Singapore. The one-year contract extension is likely a strategic move by Toto Wolff to keep options open for Max Verstappen and be ready to act should Mercedes develop a more competitive car than Red Bull. George Russell had requested a multi-year deal, but Toto Wolff apparently prevailed in the negotiation. As a result, the #63 may face a similar scenario in 12 months’ time, with future uncertainties looming despite his current extension.
