Sauber announced a few days ago the signing of Gabriel Bortoleto, who will be driving alongside Nico Hulkenberg for the next two seasons (including the first under the Audi brand).
The Brazilian driver, part of the McLaren Academy, won the FIA Formula 3 last year and is on the verge of repeating the feat by winning the FIA F2 this year. He currently leads the championship with two races left to go, at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi.
In short, we’re looking at a driver who could potentially represent the future of Formula 1. Ralf Schumacher shares this view, and speaking to Sky Germany, he gave his opinion on Sauber-Audi’s signing of the Brazilian.
“I think it’s very positive that Sauber is taking a new approach, in the sense of giving young drivers a chance. Of course, it’s clear that if a driver who won immediately in Formula 3 and is leading in Formula 2 comes on the market, then we’re at a level similar to that of Oscar Piastri.”
“From this perspective, it’s understandable. Of course, it’s a bit disappointing from a German point of view, no doubt. Until the last moment, there was hope that Mick (Schumacher) might get a chance as well. Now, it hasn’t materialized. But there’s another young face in Formula 1, which is positive.”
Speaking of Mick Schumacher, his uncle offered a rather clear picture of the situation. The former Haas driver—now under contract with Mercedes and racing with Alpine in the WEC with the A424 LMDh—faces a tough path to return to Formula 1. Something unexpected would need to happen, like illnesses during race weekends or injuries to regular drivers.
“Formula 1 is a crazy business. This means that anything can always happen. The question now is: Who will be the substitute driver? Maybe that’s the case. Or he might focus on his endurance career, which is also a wonderful and fantastic series, with hypercars and LMdH, with official teams.” – he pointed out.
“The topic of Formula 1, for Mick, is now rather unrealistic, unless—and of course, no one wishes this on anyone—someone falls ill or retires. We’ve seen it with Colapinto, who is now on everyone’s lips, maybe for a seat next year. This means that if you have a chance, something can happen. But I believe it will be difficult after such a long absence.” – Ralf Schumacher concluded.
