Oscar Piastri was forced to give up his position to teammate Lando Norris in the sprint race of the F1 Grand Prix in Brazil, finishing in second place just ahead of Verstappen.
The sprint race of the twenty-first round of the F1 championship took place at the Interlagos circuit in Brazil, where poleman Oscar Piastri was compelled to cede his position to teammate Lando Norris. He finished in second place just in front of Max Verstappen.
What didn’t happen in Hungary was seen today. After securing a super pole position yesterday, the Australian showcased the strength of the McLaren on the Brazilian circuit even during the sprint race.
Starting on medium compound yellow tires, Oscar Piastri began to set a very fast and consistent pace. Once Leclerc and Verstappen put Norris under attack, McLaren asked him to slow down to give DRS to the number 4.
Oscar Piastri followed the team orders. In the final laps, he also gave up first position to allow his teammate to gain some points on Max Verstappen, who leads the drivers’ championship.
Shortly after the swap between the Woking team drivers, a Virtual Safety Car was deployed for the retirement of Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas. With the return of the green flag, Oscar Piastri was attacked by the Dutch Red Bull driver, who was unable to complete the overtaking maneuver.
Despite the disappointment, Oscar Piastri can still look forward to tomorrow’s Grand Prix, aiming to replicate his excellent performance in the evening qualifying session. Given Ferrari’s step back, this McLaren double puts them slightly ahead in the 2024 Formula 1 constructors’ championship.
“It was a bit of a complicated race,” Oscar Piastri said to F1’s microphones. “The track has many bumps, and the ideal line was very narrow. If you went slightly off, you risked a lot. Despite everything, we scored important points, and I think we’ll do well tomorrow.”
“I’m optimistic for the Grand Prix. The pace was good. We also need to keep an eye on Ferrari and Max, who performed very well. We still have some improvements to make for qualifying, but we’re in a good position.”
