Early in the 2025 Formula 1 season, Gabriel Bortoleto was overshadowed by fellow rookies Andrea Kimi Antonelli and the surprising Isack Hadjar. Even being a teammate of experienced Nico Hulkenberg was no guarantee of attention, especially now that the German driver finally ended his podium drought with a third-place finish at Silverstone. However, just before the summer pause, Gabriel Bortoleto boldly claimed his spot in the spotlight. At the Hungaroring, he delivered a stunning performance in both qualifying and the race, finishing a remarkable sixth place.
“I’m really happy with this result; it’s the best we’ve achieved so far and it shows the excellent work we are doing as a team,” said the Sauber driver. “I believe it’s only the beginning of what we can accomplish together. The race was very intense and mentally demanding, with 70 laps during which you couldn’t afford a single mistake. I gave everything I had and didn’t miss a single corner. We took advantage of every opportunity. Racing behind a two-time world champion like Fernando Alonso and ahead of a four-time world champion like Max Verstappen was an incredible experience. I want to thank all the team members, both at the track and at Hinwil, for this first part of the season. What we have achieved wouldn’t have been possible without all the work we’ve done together. Now I just want to enjoy this moment with my family and celebrate the progress we’ve made as a team.”
Meanwhile, Nico Hulkenberg did not hold back in the race, fighting his way up from the back of the field. “The two-stop strategy didn’t pay off, but I also compromised the weekend in qualifying. We’ve scored points in six consecutive races, which shows how much we are improving. I’m very happy that Gabi secured eight points for the team. We are firmly fighting for sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship, and that’s thanks to everyone’s effort. Now we will recharge during this well-deserved break.”
