“I believe that you should never, ever give up, even when there’s the smallest chance,” is one of the most famous and popular quotes from Michael Schumacher, seven-time F1 world champion. It’s a phrase he applied throughout his over twenty-year career in F1, and now it seems to be taken to heart by his son, Mick. After just two rather unlucky seasons in the top series, with a backmarker team, the son of the seven-time champion is doing everything he can to prove his talent, working hard to secure a seat for 2025.
As of today, the last vacant spot before the 2025 F1 driver lineup is fully confirmed is at Sauber, alongside Nico Hulkenberg, who will be moving to Switzerland to become the official driver for Audi from 2026. While not exactly a dream seat, given the current state of the Sauber team, Mick Schumacher has hinted that he is a contender for the seat and is strongly hoping for a happy ending, as it would give him a chance to return to F1 and showcase his abilities.
Speaking to Sky Germany, Mick analyzed the possible scenarios for his future, brushing aside a potential plan B outside of F1, which remains, as always, his first choice in motorsport.
“I’ll think about it if the time comes and plan A doesn’t work out. You need to have plan B in mind. I don’t know where it will lead.”
In discussing his situation and implying that the Sauber offer is on the table, Mick Schumacher suggested that the decision from the current Stake team is imminent, with the options narrowed down to two. On one side is Mick Schumacher, and on the other, the current driver Valtteri Bottas, who has expressed eagerness to know his future soon, with the season nearing its end.
“Sorting things out for the future is at the top of my priority list because it’s almost Christmas, the season is coming to a close, and it’s better to get things settled.”
Despite the last few underwhelming seasons with the team led by Alessandro Alunni Bravi, Bottas has frequently expressed a preference for a multi-year deal rather than a short-term commitment, although a change might be considered given the fierce competition for that seat. Franco Colapinto might also be considered, given how impressive he has been behind the wheel of the Williams after replacing Sargeant mid-season.
Mick Schumacher, for his part, presents an interesting alternative, especially as Sauber will become Audi in 2026. As mentioned, Audi has already signed Nico Hulkenberg for next year, placing significant importance on having a German presence. This is why Audi, a German manufacturer, might look closely at the son of the former Ferrari driver, seeing Mick as a younger option compared to Bottas, and given the experience Mick has gained in recent years as Mercedes’ third driver (focusing on simulator work for two years) and as an official driver in Alpine’s endurance program.
