Miami disappointment
The Miami GP once again placed Lando Norris in the crosshairs of criticism. The McLaren driver, who finished second at the line and was once again beaten by his teammate Oscar Piastri, was involved in several on-track battles with reigning world champion Max Verstappen. However, both at the start and during the race, Norris came off second best in the fight with Red Bull’s #1, losing seconds that ultimately proved decisive in allowing Oscar Piastri to win the race.
Among those who publicly scolded the Brit was former driver – and now TV pundit – Ralf Schumacher. Speaking on an episode of the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, the former Jordan, Williams, and Toyota driver suggested Lando Norris take a look at the “overtaking techniques” of other drivers on the grid. Among them, Ralf Schumacher even pointed to a rookie whom he considers better than the current vice world champion at executing overtakes.
The Oliver Bearman example
“What’s certain is that he’s not capable of doing it [overtaking], otherwise he’d be doing better. He’s been around long enough — there are no excuses for this,” emphasized Ralf Schumacher. “Some drivers just have a great instinct for these things. Max, for example, but also Oscar Piastri and Oliver Bearman — they’re excellent examples of how to set up an overtaking move.” – the former Formula 1 driver pointed out.
“Lando simply lacks this and he won’t learn it,” the former German driver continued. “That’s just how it is. He’s tried, but he ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that’s become a problem. I’ll say it again: he won’t learn and he’ll stay this way. That means for him, winning a championship is only possible through dominance — if he’s in front and doesn’t make mistakes”. – Ralf Schumacher concluded ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix weekend in Imola.
