Carlos Sainz senior aims for FIA presidency
When Carlos Sainz Sr. – father of the Williams driver – announced his intention to run for FIA president, some critics saw a potential conflict of interest between his possible new role and the presence of his son in Formula 1.
The two-time World Rally Champion quickly dismissed what he considers speculation, believing that his career, experience, and decades-long involvement in motorsport speak for themselves. Williams team principal James Vowles also believes that a Carlos Sainz at the helm of the FIA and another on the grid for his team would not pose any problems.

“I don’t think that scenario would cause any complications if it were to happen. First of all, Carlos has 40 years of experience in motorsport, he has a very logical view of how this sport works, how it got to where it is, and what can actually help it. He sees his son as an independent man and doesn’t interfere in anything,” said the Briton.
“I think he’s suited to be president. He’s a two-time world champion, he has broad knowledge of motorsport, from single-seaters to rallying, he’s been president of several Spanish mobility organizations. It’s not as big of a leap as some might think, but it’s up to him to decide whether that’s truly the direction he wants to go in.” He will make that decision in the coming weeks, as the Spaniard uses the time ahead to assess whether he has enough support to mount a credible challenge to Mohammed Ben Sulayem in December’s election.
