The incident between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris during the Canadian GP was reviewed by the stewards: has a penalty been issued?
It had to happen sooner or later: Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris collided in the final laps of the Canadian Grand Prix. A contact that proved costly for just one of them.
The Briton attempted to overtake his teammate, ultimately compromising his own race. On lap 66, at Turn 1, Norris looked for a gap to pass the Australian, but the contact ended badly for him. With his teammate out of the way, driver #81 crossed the finish line in fourth place.
For the first time after ten races, the podium had no McLaren drivers. The victory went to George Russell, with Max Verstappen in second and Kimi Antonelli third.
After the race, a wave of investigations followed for various reasons. Among them, the one concerning the incident between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri: the verdict is finally in. The race stewards decided to apply a 5-second penalty to Lando Norris. Since the driver had already retired from the race after the contact, the final result remains unchanged.
“Car 4 was attempting to overtake Car 81 on the main straight. It tried to move to the left of Car 81, but there was no room,” reads the FIA statement.
“The driver of Car 4 stated that he believed there might be space but realised too late there wasn’t, and thus collided with Car 81.”
“While Car 4 suffered damage and retired from the race (though still classified for the final standings), Car 81 was undamaged.”
The race stewards ruled that Norris was solely responsible for the collision. Since the collision had no immediate and significant sporting consequences, the FIA imposed a 5-second penalty.
