George Russell takes his fourth career win in F1 at the Canadian GP, converting the Pole Position he secured on Saturday.
After missing the podium in the last three consecutive races in Europe, the British Mercedes driver returns to lifting a trophy. At the Canadian GP, George Russell found his way back to victory for the first time since the 2024 round in Las Vegas, bringing Mercedes back to the top step of the podium in a Grand Prix.
Russell got off to a great start, maintaining first position ahead of Max Verstappen. The Briton then led the race without ever being seriously challenged by the Dutch driver, who was unable to mount a real attack in the opening laps, even though he managed to match the pace of the Silver Arrow.
Starting on mediums, Russell then completed two stints on hard tyres, managing his advantage and securing a well-deserved first win of the season for himself and for Mercedes, as well as a second consecutive podium in Canada after last year’s third-place finish.
George Russell consolidates his fourth place in the drivers’ standings and closes in on Verstappen and the two McLaren drivers ahead of him. Moreover, thanks to his win and Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s podium, Mercedes moves back up to second in the constructors’ standings.
His immediate reaction after the race
In the usual post-race interviews reserved for the top three finishers, George Russell commented joyfully on today’s race. Between redemption from last year’s event, thanks to the team, and praise for Kimi Antonelli, here’s what he said: “It’s fantastic to be back on the top step! The last time for us was in Las Vegas; last year here was a race lost and this year we made it happen thanks to yesterday’s incredible lap. A great day for the team, I’m really happy to see Kimi on the podium too; a big thank you to the team back at the factory for the tremendous work they’re doing to help us fight for wins again—it’s an amazing feeling.”
The key topic now is whether Mercedes will be able to maintain this level of performance on other circuits in the championship. Nico Rosberg asked him, and Russell responded:
“It’s a bit cooler here. Last year in Canada we saw this and were hopeful; the strength of our car comes out in these cooler temperatures, but we’ll see what happens in the next races. Time will tell, time will tell… I mean, in Austria last year we won! For now, we’ll enjoy this win. We had expectations coming here, and it went just how we wanted: a great day!”
