After the incident in Canada, Andrea Stella spoke about how he will manage future duels between his drivers in the upcoming F1 Grands Prix.
Papaya Rules or not Papaya Rules? That is the dilemma. Andrea Stella & Co.’s decision in the Canadian Grand Prix was to let their drivers fight. After all, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris just ten points apart and ahead of all the others in the standings, the duel was inevitable, and no team orders could be given. Unfortunately for the Woking team, the outcome was not what they had hoped for, but these are the risks of the job, and Stella knows it very well. Here’s how he intends to manage the upcoming Grands Prix between his drivers.
Andrea Stella: “We won’t change. This will make us stronger”
The Team Principal of the Woking-based team spoke to Motorsport Week. “Being free to race cleanly is a value we believe in and want to uphold, rather than controlling every situation in which the drivers are close. That would make racing artificial. We want to give Oscar and Lando equal opportunities so that at the end of the season, they are in the positions they deserve. So we won’t change our strategy in the future.”
Stella then tried to ease the tension. “In the heat of the moment, this [incident] seems like the worst disaster. In reality, the strength of being racing lovers is analyzing what happened, taking everything positive from it, and letting go of what isn’t working. This is the mentality at McLaren, and it’s shown by how Lando handled the situation. This is our culture, and we will rely on it to become stronger.”
Lando Norris admits fault, but the mistakes weigh heavily
The discussion about what happened in Montreal must now shift to the Englishman. Because while Piastri comes out of it basically unscathed, Lando Norris suffers another hard blow. To be clear: he immediately took responsibility without offering the slightest excuse. However, Norris once again showed his critics that he struggles to manage duels, crumbles under pressure, and perhaps does not have what it takes to become a World Champion. Naturally, we hope he can bounce back for the sake of his career and this F1 season.
