In what is shaping up to be a World Championship battle between McLaren and Max Verstappen, we must not forget Mercedes’ involvement. After difficult seasons in which their drivers were stuck in bouncing and temperamental cars, it seems the Brackley team has now found a direction that allows them to consistently score points; in fact, George Russell is the only driver to have consistently finished in the top 5 in every session in 2025.
A welcome joy for Toto Wolff, who smiles from his second place in the Constructors’ Championship. Catching the orange arrows from Woking will be tough, but the outlook is promising. “The grid is tight, but I’m not satisfied because the McLarens are untouchable, they manage their tyres very well. There are three teams within a small margin—sometimes you get the setup right, sometimes not. We’re learning what works,” the CEO told the media.
But where did this step forward come from? “The car is easier to manage. When you add an extra flap, it responds as expected, whereas in previous years it didn’t. The core issue is keeping the tyres in the right temperature window, and we still haven’t found a way to do that properly,” the team principal added, without going into detail. In Brackley, they seem to have finally unravelled the mystery that caused so much suffering in the past—when at times the cars looked unbeatable, and at others they were at the back of the field.
