F1 | Behind the scenes: why Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez turned down early return to Formula 1. Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez could have returned to F1 this season.

Valtteri Bottas, 2024 F1
It now appears almost certain that Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez will return to Formula 1 next season with the new Cadillac team, which is set to debut in 2026. However, a recent insider report reveals that both experienced drivers could have returned to the grid as early as the 2025 season, but the proposal was ultimately declined.

The careers of both drivers did not end on the highest note in recent years. Sergio Perez, in 2024, struggled to find harmony with the Red Bull Racing car, which seemed to perform optimally only in the hands of Max Verstappen. Meanwhile, Valtteri Bottas had a difficult season with Sauber, finishing 2024 without scoring points and at the bottom of the drivers’ championship standings. Despite these challenges, their wealth of experience remains highly valuable.

Cadillac, aiming to ensure a smooth debut season as the eleventh team on the Formula 1 grid in 2026, has decided to rely on seasoned drivers. Both Bottas and Perez are known for consistency, racecraft, and strategic thinking—qualities that will help the new team avoid unnecessary mistakes and incidents during its first campaign under the sport’s new technical regulations.

Potential mid-season return that didn’t happen

The story doesn’t end with Cadillac. According to a recent report by ESPN, both Bottas and Perez were reportedly approached by Alpine to join the team during the ongoing 2025 season. Alpine had been struggling with Franco Colapinto, who faced significant difficulties on track, and considered replacing him mid-season with experienced drivers. However, negotiations failed, and both Bottas and Perez declined the offer.

This decision underscores their commitment to the Cadillac project. By focusing on the 2026 debut season instead of rushing into a mid-season return, both drivers are positioning themselves to contribute to a strong foundation for the American team. With the new regulations coming into effect in 2026, Cadillac’s management is betting that their choice of experienced drivers will provide stability, strategic insight, and leadership within the garage.

For Valtteri Bottas, a seven-time Grand Prix winner and former Mercedes driver, and Sergio Perez, a race winner with Red Bull Racing and multiple podiums to his name, patience appears to be the key. They will be able to approach 2026 fully prepared, knowing they are integral to shaping the team’s performance during a pivotal season in Formula 1’s evolving landscape.

In summary, Bottas and Perez have postponed any return to the Formula 1 track this season, opting instead to focus on Cadillac’s debut under the 2026 regulations. Their experience, consistency, and racecraft are expected to be invaluable assets, not only for the team’s debut but also for establishing a strong presence in a highly competitive Formula 1 environment. Fans will now watch eagerly as both drivers prepare for what could be a historic chapter in their careers and for the American team making its first mark in the sport.
