Mercedes considering Sergio Perez as fallback for 2026 Formula 1 seat. Sergio Perez has been linked to a surprise move to Mercedes for 2026.

Sergio Perez, Red Bull 2024

Rumors are growing about the possibility of seeing Sergio Perez in a Mercedes seat in 2026. For that to happen, a series of events would need to unfold that would push the Anglo-German team to turn to the Mexican driver. It was Checo himself who played a key role in Abu Dhabi 2021, effectively costing Lewis Hamilton the world title in favor of his teammate Max Verstappen.

Mercedes lost Hamilton last season, and George Russell’s contract also expires at the end of 2025. It seems clear that their main target is Max Verstappen, who may instead choose to join Aston Martin. Choosing Perez would be a fallback plan. Meanwhile, there is confirmation of a conversation between the Mexican driver and Toto Wolff.

The conditions needed for a deal
Of course, choosing Sergio Perez is not Mercedes’ top priority. This hypothetical scenario would only come to life after a chain of events leaves the team with no other option. Everything hinges on Max Verstappen’s future, as he must decide whether or not to remain with Red Bull for the next season. If he chooses to leave, Verstappen would have to pick between Mercedes and Aston Martin (where he would be reunited with Adrian Newey and Honda, plus a mega contract).

In addition, Russell’s situation is yet to be clarified. The Briton’s contract is expiring, and Red Bull could try to sign him as Max Verstappen’s replacement. In that case, Mercedes would be left with Kimi Antonelli and the need to look for another driver on the market. That’s when Sergio Perez would become a viable option. Toto Wolff has said he appreciates the Mexican’s work in car development. Until now, Sergio Perez has mostly been linked with Cadillac, but seeing his name tied to a team like Mercedes is a completely new development.
