Fernando Alonso stated that he has no concerns regarding Adrian Newey’s decision to concentrate on the 2026 car rather than working to solve the problems with Aston Martin’s current Formula 1 car. In just two seasons, after the false hopes at the beginning of 2023, many things have changed at Aston Martin: after five races this season, Alonso is still at zero points in the 2025 standings.
To try to climb back up the grid hierarchy, the Silverstone-based team last season hired Adrian Newey, who has been working with Aston Martin for almost two months. However, the British designer is not contributing to the development of the current car but is focusing on next year’s car, hoping to best interpret the new technical regulations.
When asked if he would like to see Newey working to improve the speed of the current car, Alonso replied: “I think that, in the end, it’s his decision. He has enough experience, knowledge, and background to know what is best. I think he is working only on 2026, so if he decided that way, I fully support him.”
The Spanish driver downplayed the importance of building momentum during the current season, placing greater attention on the new 2026 regulations, which could shake up the order in Formula 1. “It’s less important compared to last year because this year’s cars are a continuation of last year’s,” said Fernando Alonso.
“Compared to the last race in Abu Dhabi… I don’t think the results we are seeing now are very different from those in Abu Dhabi. So I think that next year there will be a completely new regulation that will reset everything we have learned this year. Maybe it’s not very useful for next year in terms of the car’s aerodynamics.” – the former Ferrari and McLaren driver pointed out – “Obviously, you always want to finish the season on a positive note and keep everyone’s motivation high. The motivation in the team is still very high because, as we have said many times, we have our new wind tunnel operational for a few weeks now, we have Adrian, we have Honda coming, new regulations, so the motivation is really high.” – the Spaniard concluded.
