This Formula 1 season features no fewer than six rookies, and the competition for a seat in the top class is fiercer than ever. Yet Valtteri Bottas, currently a reserve driver for Mercedes, is looking to 2026 with hope: Cadillac’s entry could shuffle several pieces on the board.
The 2026 season represents an opportunity, thanks to Cadillac’s arrival in the paddock, which will bring two new seats to the grid. It seems the American team wants to pair an experienced driver with an American one and, although Valtteri Bottas doesn’t see this option as an easy path, it’s definitely one worth keeping an eye on and evaluating carefully.
When asked whether Cadillac represents his best chance for an F1 return in 2026, Valtteri Bottas told Autosport: “I think this season will tell. Obviously, we have many rookies on the grid, and in this sport, you never know. Something can always trigger new changes among teams and drivers.”
“But yes, it’s certainly an interesting option. It wouldn’t be an easy route, but if there were a clear plan to get there, then it could really be an interesting project, where experience could make a difference. So, we’ll wait and see,” the Finnish driver added.
Valtteri Bottas also made it clear that Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ team principal, wouldn’t stand in his way should an opportunity arise: “He told me he’d like to see me racing again. And he agreed with me when I said I don’t feel finished with this sport. It’s not time yet. So I think he’d be happy to see me in a race seat again. And obviously, if it’s not with Mercedes, he wouldn’t be against it.”
