Cadillac’s first F1 seat: Mario Andretti confirms strong interest in Sergio Perez, but other options are also being considered. The former driver and 1978 world champion with Lotus is playing a key role in General Motors’ entry into Formula 1. As a consultant for the new American team, he will help guide the selection of its two drivers.
Starting in 2026, the Formula 1 grid will welcome the long-awaited eleventh team. Two additional cars ready to put on a show, but also to offer seats to drivers currently outside the F1 roster. The opportunity is enticing: Cadillac has the backing of General Motors, which has no intention of settling for the back of the grid once its American power unit is ready.
In the meantime, the team will use Ferrari engines, which could play a significant role in the choice of at least one of the two drivers. Much has been said about the possibility of Zhou Guanyu returning to the grid, but his name is not the only one linked to the new Stars and Stripes team, alongside Sergio Perez.
Mario Andretti: “We have limited options for one of Cadillac’s two seats”
The goal is clear: “One of the seats must go to an experienced driver,” Mario Andretti told ESPN. “We all know that the choices are very limited in this regard. Realistically, we’re talking about two or three names at most, and I won’t tell you who they are. [Sergio Perez] is an option; he would be a great choice. I’d love to share more, but we’re trying to keep it under wraps.”
Two other experienced drivers linked to Cadillac are Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo. Much will depend on the second seat: if it goes to Zhou Guanyu, Perez’s chances would increase, as the Mexican would be an ideal choice for an American team. However, the situation could change if Colton Herta, the 25-year-old American and former IndyCar vice-champion, secures the spot.
