A small and amusing episode took place between Franco Colapinto and Sergio Perez at the start of the Qatar Sprint. Both drivers started from the pit lane, but while the Argentine managed to gain two positions, the Mexican’s difficult run continued.
As the lights went out, the young Williams driver wasted no time and overtook his rival in the pit lane. Sergio Perez, on the other hand, reacted when it was already too late. On lap eight, Franco Colapinto tried to move forward, overtaking Guanyu Zhou.
When speaking to the press after the Sprint about his maneuver in the pit lane, the Argentine didn’t hold back his usual humor:
“Yeah, Checo fell asleep. It’s clear he wasn’t watching the lights. Maybe he was trying to get into first gear. Sometimes it takes a while. I was already ready to go; the tires were warm. He was waiting, and I was in a hurry. At least we gained one place,” he said in front of the Spanish television cameras.
Franco Colapinto’s overtake on Sergio Perez could be worth a Red Bull seat next year. It’s no secret that Christian Horner is interested in the Williams driver, whose talent has impressed everyone since his debut in Monza. Sergio Perez’s future, however, is still uncertain, and it’s not guaranteed that we will see him alongside Max Verstappen in 2025.
During the 19 laps of the Sprint Race, the two McLarens maintained the lead, finishing the short race with an easy 1-2. The victory was in the hands of Lando Norris, who slowed down at the line to let teammate Oscar Piastri take the win.
