After more than a thousand days, Max Verstappen is no longer the leader of the Formula 1 World Championship. Not since before the 2022 Spanish GP had there been a different name at the top of the standings. Back then, it was Charles Leclerc; now, it is Lando Norris. The Englishman was the well-deserved winner of a chaotic Australian GP. Chaotic for everyone except him, as he remained composed under pressure from Oscar Piastri and, in the final laps, Max Verstappen himself. It was a strong display from a driver who had the best car on the grid but had struggled mentally against his Dutch friend and rival in the past season. This time, however, he held his nerve.
Lando Norris’ Analysis
“A mistake-free race? Actually, I did make a couple of mistakes,” Lando Norris admitted honestly to F1TV, referring in particular to a moment when he ran wide just before pitting for intermediate tires. “But they were acceptable given how tough the conditions were. You can see how many mistakes others made, crashing out and ending their races early. People watching from the outside probably don’t realize how difficult a race like this is—especially when you’re leading.” – the British driver pointed out.
Praise for the Team
“When you have a bit of a gap, you can relax and find a good rhythm,” Lando Norris continued in his race analysis. “But those last three laps, with Max behind me, were stressful because there was a drying racing line, and if you moved just a meter off it, you’d pay the price immediately, and it could all be over. In races like today, you’re playing with fire—you push to the limit, have big moments, and risk going off multiple times. But that’s the level you have to reach to try to win a race against drivers like Oscar and Max. It was tough and stressful, but we made the right decisions at the right time. That’s what won me the race today—I had good pace and drove well, but the strategy was also spot on, so I have to thank the team for that.” When it comes to learning from past mistakes.
