Lando Norris opens up: “Winning the title is my dream, but I want to be remembered as a good person”. Lando Norris opens up in an interview with McLaren's official YouTube channel.

Lando Norris, 2025 F1

The British Formula 1 driver gave an insightful and heartfelt interview to McLaren’s official YouTube channel, once again revealing the authenticity and depth of his personality.

A unique personality on the F1 grid
Unlike many of his rivals on the current Formula 1 grid, Lando Norris has increasingly shown—especially over the last few seasons—that he has a personality that sets him apart. While reigning world champion Max Verstappen projects an image of relentless determination and a win-at-all-costs mentality, and Australian teammate Oscar Piastri is building a reputation as emotionally unshakeable and icy under pressure, Norris is often portrayed differently. The British driver, who races for the McLaren Formula 1 Team, has sometimes been criticized for what some interpret as a lack of ruthless competitiveness or mental resilience in the most intense moments.

However, in 2025 more than ever, Lando Norris finds himself under the spotlight as he battles for his first-ever Formula 1 World Championship title. His closest rival is none other than his teammate Oscar Piastri. At the halfway mark of the current F1 season, the Australian driver leads Norris by eight points in the Drivers’ Standings. But following a difficult stretch that included a retirement in the Canadian Grand Prix, the British driver has bounced back with back-to-back victories in Austria and at his home race in Silverstone, reigniting his championship hopes.

In a candid and personal interview with the McLaren team’s official YouTube channel, Norris—born in 1999—opened up about his mindset, motivations, and emotional experiences. The portrait that emerged is that of a young man who may divide opinions, but who clearly stands apart from the traditional Formula 1 driver archetype.

On pressure and his dream of becoming world champion
“Everyone has their dreams and aspirations. And obviously, mine is to win and to stand on the top step of the podium,” Norris said during a reflective moment in the video. “But I didn’t start racing because I wanted to win a race. I did it because I love driving. Even though 99% of it is about winning, there’s also the satisfaction that comes from within the team—making the team members happy, giving them the results they work so hard for. That means more to me than just the feeling of personal accomplishment. My biggest source of motivation is the people I work with—my team.”

When asked about pressure—a recurring theme for Norris, especially considering the mental health challenges he has openly discussed in the past—the British driver shared that the most intense pressure he has ever felt did not come from a title fight against Max Verstappen or any on-track battle. Instead, it was during the 2024 Formula 1 season finale in Abu Dhabi, and it had more to do with the Constructors’ Championship.

“The moment I felt the most pressure was definitely Abu Dhabi last year,” he admitted. “At that moment, I felt like the entire team was relying on me. A lot of people’s happiness or disappointment rested on my performance. I knew I had to deliver. That weight on your shoulders—it’s real. But it was also a beautiful story, and I’m proud to have been part of it.”

More than a title: How Norris wants to be remembered
Finally, Lando Norris addressed the subject of legacy and how he hopes to be remembered by fans and the sport’s history. While many athletes strive for glory to cement their names in the record books, Norris made it clear that his aspirations are more personal.

“My dream is to become world champion, but it’s something that matters to me personally,” he concluded. “It’s not something I want to be remembered for in 30 years. Honestly, I think the world moves on quickly, and probably even becoming World Champion won’t mean that much in the grand scheme of things after a few decades. So, yes, I guess I’d rather be remembered for being a good person more than anything else.”

This emotional and genuine interview once again highlighted why Lando Norris is considered one of the most relatable and down-to-earth personalities on the Formula 1 grid—a driver who combines raw speed and talent with openness and authenticity, making him a fan favourite across the world.
