Oscar Piastri falls victim to rain in Australian GP: “I can only blame myself”. No glory for Oscar Piastri in his home GP in Australia.

Oscar Piastri, 2024 F1

Everything happens in Australia, where the changing weather shuffles the deck. The only constants remain Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, who finish first and second, respectively. A major disappointment, however, for home driver Oscar Piastri, who pays a high price for the rain.

From Everything to Nothing
The Australian starts his race by immediately losing position to Verstappen. Despite this, he remains close to the two leading drivers and soon puts pressure on the Dutchman again, overtaking him after seventeen laps.

From there, Piastri even challenges Norris, who, however, remains unfazed. McLaren seems in control of the race, but then the rain changes everything for the #81 driver. When it arrives in the final stages of the GP, it forces both papaya drivers to run wide, but while the Briton manages to get going immediately, the situation is different for Oscar Piastri.

The home driver remains stuck on the grass for a long time before rejoining the race from 13th place. He ultimately finishes ninth, a decidedly disappointing position compared to the car’s potential.

“My Mistake, Unfortunate Consequences”
In the post-race interview with F1, a visibly dejected Oscar Piastri analyzes his race. “I’m obviously disappointed,” said the Melbourne native. “I don’t know what to say honestly, it was a mistake on my part, but I think the consequences were very unfortunate.”

“I can only blame myself, I tried to push too hard in those conditions. Then, the other 56 and a half laps were very strong. So yes, I’m very disappointed, but there are certainly positives.”

“We are strong, even though right now I can’t think about it. I would have preferred to run a race and then finish on the top step, maybe face some difficulties but end up on the podium. Right now, it hurts, but there are still positive aspects to consider.”
