Truly great stories never really end. Even when people part ways, even under difficult circumstances, a strong and unbreakable bond doesn’t simply disappear. It doesn’t vanish after an argument, nor does it fade away with a simple goodbye. In the case of Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff—extending to Mercedes—their separation happened on good terms. Both sides recognized that they had extracted the most from their relationship, and it was simply time for a change.
However, when a relationship ends in this way, it often means that one side still cares deeply, and perhaps one party is struggling to move on completely.
Toto Wolff can’t detach himself from Lewis Hamilton
Why bring this up? Because it perfectly encapsulates what was evident when Mercedes’ team principal and co-owner, Toto Wolff, was asked about his feelings after seeing Lewis Hamilton race for another team for the first time in 12 years. Reflecting on the 2025 season opener, he admitted, “Sometimes I was looking at the screens, and it felt like we were racing with three drivers: George Russell, Kimi Antonelli, and Lewis Hamilton.” – the Mercedes team boss pointed out.
The Australian Grand Prix proved to be an emotional challenge for Toto Wolff, as he began processing this new reality. “It’s time to accept that Lewis is a Ferrari driver now—he doesn’t drive for us anymore,” he concluded, as reported by GPBlog.com. These words would likely have been appreciated by the seven-time world champion and serve as a testament to the depth of their connection.
Their friendship stands as a remarkable example of how true and genuine relationships can transcend professional interests, team allegiances, and even the competitive world of Formula 1.
