After a strong qualifying session, where Williams placed both cars in the top 10, the Australian GP was meant to confirm the progress made by the Grove-based team over the winter. In many ways, it did, despite an unfortunate start with Sainz crashing into the barriers in the early stages of the race. The Spaniard’s retirement did not dampen the enthusiasm of Vowles & Co., as Alexander Albon shined in the final laps under the rain, finishing fifth.
Alex Albon Confident: “We Can Be the Best in the Midfield”
After fending off attacks from Lewis Hamilton for much of the race, the Thai driver kept his composure when the rain returned, finishing just behind Kimi Antonelli. “For a season opener, I have to say it was really tough,” Alex Albon told SkyF1. “I think anyone who finished the race today did a great job. It took a lot of experience, and being cautious was crucial, even though at times I was able to push. In this kind of race, the key is to survive—then the result comes naturally.”
“I can’t help but be happy,” Alex Albon continued. “We achieved a fantastic result for the team with an exceptional strategy. I dedicate this fifth place to everyone at Grove. Yesterday was a great day, and today, despite track conditions being the worst for us, we showed we have a competitive car.”
With their strong debut in Melbourne, Williams moves up to fourth in the Constructors’ Championship, proving they can be the best of the midfield teams. “I think today we were the strongest behind the top teams,” Albon confirmed. “Although I know it will be a tough battle with Racing Bulls and Alpine all season. Overall, this result shows that if we execute everything perfectly, we can even get close to the front-running teams. Realistically, we can fight for the top 10 in every race.”
Carlos Sainz, Gearbox Issue Behind Retirement
Reflecting on his unlucky Williams debut, Carlos Sainz praised his teammate for the excellent result: “First of all, I have to congratulate Alex—he did an outstanding job. As for my race, I analyzed the data and understood what caused my crash, so I’m at peace with it. It was a gearbox issue while the car was in Safety Car mode. Of course, there’s some frustration, but I tried to help from the pit wall via radio for the rest of the race, and I’m glad I was at least able to contribute in that way. I’m looking forward to getting back in the car in China.”
