Twelve years after Romain Grosjean’s disqualification, Kevin Magnussen was benched from the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku city circuit. The Haas driver reached the 12 penalty points limit set by the regulations, forcing the stewards to impose a race ban for one event.
The American team decided to field Ollie Bearman, who will join the team next year. The British driver, as he had done in Jeddah, performed well in Baku, earning praise from his colleagues.
“I’m sure Kevin will resume his place until the end of the season,” Ollie Bearman said after the race, responding to questions about the possibility of racing in the final events of the year.
Kevin Magnussen calls for changes for the good of the sport
A few weeks after his disqualification, Kevin Magnussen returned to the topic, hoping changes might be made for the good of F1. “I’m happy if what happened to me can lead to some change,” said the Danish driver. “Honestly, I think it wasn’t good for F1 to see a driver sidelined due to disqualification. It’s sad to see the sport you love change so much.”
Kevin Magnussen also spoke about his own responsibilities. “I’m definitely a driver who likes to fight hard. But I also think that racing on the edge is part of motorsport,” the Dane added. “Personally, as a fan, I would like to see something change to bring exciting racing back on track.” – the Haas driver concluded.
