Ralf Schumacher slams Colton Herta’s Cadillac F1 ambitions despite Super Licence breakthrough

Ralf Schumacher, 2024

Colton Herta has finally reached the 40 points required to qualify for an FIA Formula 1 Super Licence, removing a major obstacle to a potential Cadillac race seat in 2027. However, former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher has delivered a scathing assessment of the American’s prospects, insisting that his performances do not justify a place on the Formula 1 grid.

The breakthrough came during the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, when Herta secured the final point needed to meet the Super Licence eligibility threshold. But while Cadillac can now consider the American for a race seat without the previous regulatory obstacle, Schumacher believes the team would be making a mistake by promoting him. The former German driver, now a pundit for Sky Deutschland, made little effort to soften his criticism.

Ralf Schumacher delivers brutal verdict on Colton Herta’s Cadillac F1 ambitions

Asked about the possibility of Colton Herta becoming a full-time Cadillac driver for the 2027 Formula 1 season, Ralf Schumacher dismissed the idea with a sarcastic response.

“Only if Easter and Christmas fell on the same day,” Schumacher replied, leaving little doubt about his assessment of the American driver’s chances.

The former Formula 1 race winner then went further, questioning the value of Cadillac’s programme for Herta and suggesting that the team would be better served by giving opportunities to other young drivers.

“Frankly, it’s pointless. He’s just burning fuel, as Franz Tost would say. I really don’t understand what the point is. They could put other drivers in the car, young drivers.”

Schumacher’s criticism became even more severe when he turned his attention to Herta’s results in the junior categories, particularly his performances in Formula 2.

“He was really, really bad in Formula 2. As far as I’m concerned, he doesn’t deserve it at all. I think it’s positive that they want to promote American drivers, but there has to be some logic to it. Herta has no place in Formula 1.”

Although Schumacher supports the idea of promoting American talent to Formula 1, he clearly does not believe Herta is the right candidate. His comments come at a particularly important moment for Cadillac, which must decide whether to retain its experienced driver line-up or make room for an American racer.

Colton Herta reaches 40 FIA Super Licence points after Mexico confusion

Herta’s Super Licence situation had become unexpectedly complicated during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend. An error involving the published 2025 IndyCar championship standings had resulted in an incorrect calculation of his eligibility points.

The American had initially been listed as finishing sixth in the standings rather than seventh. That discrepancy meant his Super Licence total had been overestimated, leaving him with 39 points instead of the required 40.

The Brazilian Grand Prix weekend finally resolved the problem, with Herta earning the additional point necessary to reach the FIA’s eligibility threshold. Having accumulated the required 40 points, the American is now eligible to apply for the Super Licence needed to compete in Formula 1.

The development removes a regulatory barrier to his potential 2027 debut, although it does not automatically guarantee him a place on the grid. Cadillac must still decide whether to offer him a full-time race seat.

Cadillac faces difficult 2027 decision between Colton Herta and Valtteri Bottas

With the Super Licence points requirement now satisfied, Herta’s biggest remaining challenge is securing a place in Cadillac’s driver line-up. Sergio Pérez has already been confirmed with the American team until at least 2029, leaving uncertainty surrounding the future of Valtteri Bottas.

The Finnish driver is still awaiting confirmation of a contract renewal, while team principal Marcin Budkowski has explained that Bottas will need to repeat convincing performances such as his showing in Austin to earn another opportunity with the team.

Bottas, for his part, remains confident about his prospects and views Cadillac’s development programme for Herta as an investment in the team’s future rather than necessarily an immediate threat to his own position.

Cadillac must therefore weigh the benefits of retaining an experienced Formula 1 driver against the prospect of promoting an American talent. The decision also comes as the team continues developing its commercial presence, with Sergio Pérez’s extensive sponsorship portfolio and commercial influence already forming part of its wider profile.

Why 2027 could be Colton Herta’s decisive F1 opportunity

Time could become an important factor in Herta’s Formula 1 ambitions. The American earned 30 Super Licence points through his second-place finish in the 2024 IndyCar championship, but those points risk falling outside the FIA’s relevant eligibility window after 2027.

That creates additional pressure to secure a Formula 1 opportunity while his current points total remains valid. Although reaching the 40-point threshold represents an important milestone, a continued absence from the Formula 1 grid could complicate his eligibility in subsequent seasons.

For Cadillac, the decision is therefore about more than simply choosing between two drivers. The team must consider the immediate advantages of Bottas’ Formula 1 experience alongside the longer-term prospect of placing an American driver in an American Formula 1 car.

Herta has cleared the points obstacle that previously stood between him and a potential debut, but Schumacher remains firmly unconvinced that he deserves the opportunity. Cadillac must now decide whether to continue relying on Bottas’ experience or take the opportunity to promote its American prospect for 2027.
