The Surprise of 2024
The second half of last season saw Franco Colapinto emerge as one of the biggest surprises of the championship. Called up by Williams to replace Logan Sargeant, the Argentine rookie scored two points finishes, securing eighth place in Baku and tenth in Austin. These performances attracted interest from multiple teams in the 21-year-old, who is set to leave Williams due to the already signed contracts of Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz.
A Future in Place of Jack Doohan?
Now a reserve driver for Alpine, the South American has been at the center of speculation regarding Jack Doohan’s position. The Australian, signed by the French manufacturer as Pierre Gasly’s new teammate, could lose his seat to Colapinto as early as after the first six races if he fails to impress. The Argentine has particularly caught the eye of Flavio Briatore, who has been pushing for his promotion since arriving at Enstone.
James Vowles on Doohan and Franco Colapinto
However, many still support Jack Doohan, arguing that he needs time to prove himself at Alpine or that he is simply a better option than Franco Colapinto. Williams’ former Team Principal, James Vowles, shares the first opinion while also believing that his former driver is ready to step in if needed: “I think both things,” the Briton explained at the Autosport Awards. “Jack should be given time to prove his worth—simple as that. Every driver should get that opportunity. If—and it’s a big if—he’s not at the right level, Franco is there. That’s what I mean. Looking at the grid, it’s the best opportunity for him, and my job is to make sure he’s in the best possible situation. I think he’s ready to step in immediately, but it will be Alpine’s decision.”
