Oscar Piastri finds himself at a crossroads and is facing a mental turning point: according to Jacques Villeneuve, a fundamental step is necessary for the Australian driver to successfully tackle the upcoming season at McLaren. The process surrounding Oscar Piastri, Formula 1, and McLaren goes far beyond final standings and statistics, focusing instead on mindset and resilience.
After chasing the 2025 world championship for much of the season, Oscar Piastri now prepares to turn the page, tasked with transforming a major disappointment into a fresh starting point. This journey involves the driver himself, the Woking team, and even external observers who understand the pressure of losing a championship that seemed already within grasp.
Piastri had led the standings for most of the year, entering the last nine races with a 34-point lead over teammate Lando Norris following his victory at the Dutch Grand Prix. That margin initially seemed solid, but a difficult weekend in Baku and lackluster performances in Austin, Mexico City, and São Paulo caused a dramatic collapse. Seven races without a podium allowed Norris and Max Verstappen to overturn the situation, leaving the Australian in third place, 13 points short of the title.
Villeneuve warns Oscar Piastri: “Start from zero”
Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 world champion, does not mince words when describing what awaits the McLaren driver. “You have to be tough, that’s the point,” Villeneuve explained. “From the outside it all seems nice and friendly, but it’s a ruthless world. This year didn’t work out and he knows he had that championship in his hands. He was controlling it.”
According to Villeneuve, the disappointment feels even deeper due to the way the season unfolded. “For Oscar, it’s harder than for Max. He didn’t even expect to win the title. Oscar Piastri, on the other hand, finished third, behind Verstappen—not even second. This will stay with him.”
The key step will happen over the winter: “It’s something he will need to process. The goal is to return for the first test as a completely new person, forgetting this season entirely. Start from zero, fresh.” This is a clear message, which within McLaren already sounds like the first real directive for Oscar Piastri’s future in Formula 1.
