Toto Wolff reacts to frightening karting crash involving nine-year-old son Jack

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal

Mercedes Formula 1 team principal Toto Wolff was confronted with frightening footage of his nine-year-old son Jack’s karting accident during a live television interview following FP2 at the 2026 United States Grand Prix. The incident occurred at the Leopard Circuit in Viterbo, Italy, where another kart went over Jack Wolff’s vehicle and struck him around the shoulder and helmet. Fortunately, the young driver escaped without serious consequences, although his father admitted that he did not want to watch the images.

The Austrian Mercedes boss was speaking to Davide Camicioli, Matteo Bobbi and Vicky Piria on Sky Sport F1 when the footage was shown. Toto Wolff immediately reassured viewers that his son was doing well, but his reaction reflected the concern of a parent witnessing a particularly dangerous accident. He subsequently addressed the need for improved karting safety standards and revealed that Jack Wolff was more frustrated about losing a potential victory than frightened by the incident itself.

Jack Wolff escapes frightening karting crash at Viterbo circuit

Jack Wolff was competing in the IAME Warriors Final at the Leopard Circuit in Viterbo, racing in the X30 Mini category for KR Motorsport. During one of Friday’s qualifying heats, with only a few laps remaining, the nine-year-old became involved in a multi-kart accident.

Following contact between several competitors, another kart became airborne and passed over Jack Wolff’s vehicle, striking him in the shoulder and helmet area. The incident looked particularly alarming, but the young driver was fortunately able to get up without assistance.

The accident prompted officials to display the red flag and brought Jack Wolff’s participation in the heat to an end. Despite the dramatic circumstances, the youngster avoided serious injury.

The official timing data from the X30 Mini A-F heat confirms that Jack Wolff completed six laps, compared with seven for the leading finishers. It also reveals how competitive he had been before the accident.

His fastest lap of 1:01.649 was 0.146 seconds quicker than the best lap recorded by eventual winner Nahyl Elgahoudi. The performance supports Toto Wolff’s assessment of his son’s speed during the race.

“He didn’t do anything wrong; he was dominating the race,” Toto Wolff explained.

Toto Wolff refuses to watch footage of son’s karting accident on live TV

The images of the Viterbo crash were also shown during Toto Wolff’s interview with Sky Sport F1 Italy after the second free practice session at Austin. The Mercedes team principal was thousands of miles away from the incident, preparing for the United States Grand Prix weekend, when he was confronted with footage of his son’s accident.

Although Toto Wolff reassured everyone that Jack was fine, he made no attempt to conceal his discomfort at seeing the crash.

“I don’t want to watch those images,” he said.

For a moment, the Mercedes team principal was speaking primarily as a father rather than someone who has spent decades working in a sport where managing risks is an everyday responsibility.

His reaction highlighted how difficult it can be to remain composed when an accident involves a member of one’s own family. Even someone with Toto Wolff’s extensive motorsport experience is not immune to the concern that comes with watching a child involved in a dangerous racing incident.

Mercedes boss calls for stronger FIA karting safety measures

Toto Wolff used the discussion to raise wider concerns about safety in motorsport, particularly in the junior karting categories where many future professional racing drivers begin their careers.

He stressed that safety standards must continue to improve from the earliest stages of competition. The children racing in karting championships today are the drivers who may progress to single-seaters and higher categories of motorsport in the years ahead.

For that reason, Toto Wolff believes the FIA should place particular emphasis on improving protection for young competitors.

The accident in Viterbo also illustrated one of the specific risks associated with kart racing. Under the 2026 CIK-FIA technical regulations, these vehicles do not feature an enclosed cockpit, roof or suspension.

Consequently, when one kart becomes airborne and passes over another, the driver beneath can be particularly exposed. The circumstances of Jack Wolff’s accident underline why the Mercedes team principal believes safety improvements should remain a priority throughout the junior categories.

Jack Wolff more upset about losing victory than frightening accident

Despite the severity of the incident, Toto Wolff revealed that his son’s reaction afterwards was not what many might have expected.

Rather than dwelling on the frightening collision, Jack Wolff was primarily frustrated about losing what he believed could have been a race victory with just one lap remaining.

According to his father, the young driver was more angry about the missed opportunity than worried about what had happened on the circuit.

That determination was also reflected in Jack Wolff’s immediate plans. Toto Wolff confirmed that his son was already intending to return to the track on Saturday to continue his race weekend.

The nine-year-old is the son of Toto Wolff and Susie Wolff, who is also closely involved in motorsport. Discussing the family’s reaction, the Mercedes team principal joked about his wife’s response to the accident.

“This time she was the one who banged her fist on the table,” Toto Wolff remarked.

Jack Wolff determined to race again after winning first karting title

Jack Wolff’s determination comes shortly after an important milestone in his young racing career. Only last month, he secured his first title in Italian karting, demonstrating his competitive potential at an early age.

His performance in the X30 Mini heat at Viterbo offered another indication of his speed, with a fastest lap better than that of the eventual winner despite being forced to retire following the accident.

For Toto Wolff and Susie Wolff, the incident was understandably frightening, particularly given the way another kart passed directly over their son’s vehicle. However, the fact that Jack escaped serious injury brought immediate relief.

As Mercedes continues its preparations for the 2026 United States Grand Prix at Austin, Toto Wolff has another reason to be grateful beyond anything happening on the Formula 1 circuit.

His son’s main concern, meanwhile, remains getting back behind the wheel. Despite an accident that would understandably frighten any parent, Jack Wolff is already focused on returning to competition.

Volgens de update maakt hij het goed na een kleine medische behandeling – en wil hij op zaterdag alweer racen.
