Max Verstappen and Mercedes: a pairing that seems destined to come together in the future. There’s no doubt about Toto Wolff’s interest in him, as well as the various conversations that had been initiated between them in recent months.
And with Red Bull struggling (with tensions both on and off the track), it’s logical that the Dutchman would seek some stability for his future. The topic resurfaced during an interview with Motorsport.com.
In the interview, the three-time Formula 1 world champion hinted at the possibility of switching teams in 2026. However, for now, his priority lies elsewhere.
“Yes, of course, I know it’s possible, but I’m not really thinking about it right now,” he said. Stating that “I already have enough things to worry about at the moment,” Max Verstappen added that he wants to focus on the current state of Red Bull. “There are other things we want to improve.” – the Dutch driver pointed out in his recent interview.
Regarding the possibility of switching teams in 2026, he said: “We’ll see what happens in the future. Right now, I’m not thinking about it much, to be honest. But if it doesn’t happen, then so be it. It won’t change my life.”
It’s not just Mercedes; Aston Martin also represents an attractive prospect, especially now with the hiring of Adrian Newey. Red Bull knows exactly what they need to do to prevent their champion from leaving: provide him with a competitive car. Max Verstappen also knows that Formula 1 in 2026, with the new regulations, will be an unknown for all teams. That’s why it’s difficult to predict what will happen in the driver market.
“Most of the top drivers have performance-related exit clauses in their contracts. Like them, Max does too,” assured Red Bull’s consultant Helmut Marko in a recent interview for the German broadcaster RTL/ntv. “So if we can’t give him a car to fight with, then it will definitely be something he’ll think about.” – he concluded.
