It was a perfect weekend for Max Verstappen in Austin, bringing the championship back into focus. The Dutch driver enjoyed an almost flawless performance throughout the weekend, dominating from the early stages all the way to the Grand Prix. Thanks to a series of near-perfect races, his gap to the top of the Drivers’ Championship has narrowed to 42 points. If he maintains this positive momentum in the upcoming races, a three-way battle for the title could realistically take shape.
During FP1, Verstappen was relatively quiet, finishing in a modest P5. However, everything changed during the Shootout qualifying sessions. From that point onward, only first place mattered in Texas. He asserted his dominance from Friday qualifying, confirmed it in the Sprint race, continued to set the pace in Saturday’s qualifying, and showcased his superiority in Sunday’s Grand Prix.
The four-time world champion controlled the race from start to finish, taking the victory without serious threats from his rivals. The duel between Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc allowed him to build a comfortable gap, but the pace he demonstrated was far from ordinary. Overall, it was a flawless weekend that not only strengthened his position in the championship fight but also confirmed that Verstappen remains a formidable force on track.
The magic of Max Verstappen
“It was an incredible weekend for us,” Max Verstappen said. “We really maximized all the results, and I think today, in the race, the most important part was definitely that first stint.”
“Charles [Leclerc] was, of course, fighting with Lando [Norris], and that allowed me to build a good gap. Because, in truth, as soon as Lando was in clean air, the situation was very balanced, or he was even slightly faster.”
“Yes, we managed to maintain the gap until the end, but it wasn’t exactly easy. Perhaps it looked like a simple race on TV, but today managing the laps was tough. Even with the wind, you could expect something different every lap. In this race, being consistent was quite difficult, but we managed it,” the four-time world champion explained.
Over the past five races, the Dutch driver has pushed to the maximum and fought for victory. Now, 42 points behind the championship leader, his chances of contesting the title appear realistic. Approximately two more wins could bring him within striking distance of securing what would be his fifth consecutive Drivers’ Championship.
The Red Bull champion confirmed: “Yes, we’re having really strong weekends, and of course, we know we have to be perfect until the end of the season to have a chance. But we’ll try, and if we succeed, it will obviously be fantastic.”
“Otherwise, we will have done everything possible until the end and made things a little more exciting. And I think that’s the right spirit for us. It’s positive pressure—we don’t feel like it’s weighing on us. We’re not stressed; we’re just going full throttle,” he concluded.
