What the Mercedes driver said
George Russell won the fourth race of his career in Canada, giving Mercedes their first victory of the 2025 Formula 1 season. The British driver secured pole position and then delivered a flawless performance in the race through to the chequered flag.
Thanks to the fourth place of championship leader Oscar Piastri, George Russell recovered 13 points and is now 62 points behind the Australian in the Drivers’ standings. However, the 1998-born driver remains skeptical about his actual chances of staying in the fight for the world title.
According to George Russell, McLaren will not continue squandering the clear technical advantage they’ve had over the first 10 races: “To be honest, I don’t know how it’s possible that Max and I are still quite close to the McLaren drivers in the standings,” said George Russell in the press conference. “They clearly have a dominant car. Apparently, we’ve managed to get the most out of most of the weekends so far. I don’t think McLaren will keep throwing away points like they are now. A year ago, Norris was able to get back in the title fight relying solely on the performance of his car, and I don’t think there’s a similar foundation for me or Max to do the same. We’ll stay in contention only if things like what happened here in Canada keep occurring.” – the British driver concluded at the end of the Canadian Grand Prix, which was held last Sunday at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal.
