George Russell has revealed the clauses tied to his Mercedes contract renewal, making it clear that his future with the team is in his own hands. The Brackley outfit’s driver pairing was recently confirmed for the upcoming season. Contract discussions continued throughout the summer, but an agreement was finally reached. George Russell himself disclosed the details behind his renewal and dismissed speculation about Max Verstappen replacing him.
The British driver has proven himself as one of the top talents on the grid this season. Victories in Canada and Singapore have highlighted his skills, giving him strong leverage to continue impressing Mercedes. If he maintains this level of performance, his place in the team will remain secure, even with the potential arrival of a four-time World Champion.
Russell explains the renewal clauses
In an interview with The Telegraph, George Russell detailed the specific conditions of his contract: “This is something I haven’t revealed publicly yet, but the agreement includes a clause that, if I meet my commitments next year, there is a specific clause stating that if I achieve a target, we will automatically renew for 2027.”
In other words, George Russell’s future with Mercedes is directly tied to his performance and results. He emphasized: “My seat for 2027 is in my hands. I won’t be fooled. We won’t be in the same position as six months ago. If I perform well — I don’t want to go into details — but if I perform well, then I will stay 100%.”
