Christian Horner has revealed that he no longer has any relationship with Helmut Marko, accusing his former Red Bull colleague of working to remove him from the team during an exceptionally difficult period in his personal life. More than a year after his dismissal in July 2025, the former Red Bull team principal has spoken openly about their bitter falling-out, the internal tensions that divided the team and the problems he believes Laurent Mekies no longer has to face.
The breakdown of their relationship followed years of success together at Red Bull, but the death of company founder Dietrich Mateschitz marked the beginning of an increasingly public power struggle. Even the team’s extraordinary results during the 2023 Formula 1 season could not completely conceal the tensions developing behind the scenes.
Christian Horner and Helmut Marko’s Red Bull power struggle
Following Dietrich Mateschitz’s death, a battle for influence developed between Christian Horner and Helmut Marko. What initially appeared to be a largely hidden conflict gradually became more obvious, creating an atmosphere of instability within one of Formula 1’s most successful teams.
The period was marked by several major developments, including Adrian Newey’s departure, speculation about Max Verstappen’s future and increasingly serious disagreements within the organisation. Christian Horner also faced allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards a female Red Bull employee, which he denied. He was subsequently cleared following an internal investigation.
By July 2025, Christian Horner’s two-decade career as Red Bull team principal had come to an end. Helmut Marko was considered an important figure in the events that led to his dismissal, while the British manager had faced accusations of concentrating too much power in his own hands.
Helmut Marko also departed Red Bull at the end of the 2025 season, describing his exit as voluntary. However, his controversial public statements and the handling of the team’s young drivers had already attracted criticism.
Both men are now outside Formula 1, while Laurent Mekies has taken charge of Red Bull’s next chapter.
Christian Horner says Helmut Marko never offered condolences
Speaking to German newspaper Bild, Christian Horner admitted that he has had no contact with Helmut Marko since leaving Red Bull. Their final conversation took place in his office on his last day with the team.
“We no longer have any relationship. On my last day working at Red Bull, the two of us were sitting in my office, and in the end we shook hands. I haven’t heard from him since, and that’s fine,” Christian Horner explained.
He then revealed how deeply the events surrounding his dismissal had affected him, particularly because they coincided with a painful family tragedy.
“He worked extremely hard to get me fired, while my former partner and the mother of my daughter had passed away shortly before. He didn’t even send me his condolences. That wasn’t a classy way to behave.”
Christian Horner’s remarks offer a personal perspective on a conflict that had previously been discussed primarily in terms of Red Bull’s internal leadership and management structure. His accusations underline how completely the relationship between two of the team’s most influential figures has deteriorated.
Horner criticises Marko’s treatment of young drivers and internal leaks
The former Red Bull team principal also reflected on the differences in their respective approaches to managing the team, particularly when it came to young drivers.
“I always thought he was too harsh with the youngsters. But there were certainly aspects of my character that drove him absolutely mad as well,” Christian Horner admitted.
Despite their disagreements, Christian Horner acknowledged that Helmut Marko had played an important role in bringing him to Red Bull in the first place.
Speaking on the Up to Speed podcast, he explained: “He played a key role in my move to Red Bull, but he could make your life incredibly difficult.”
Christian Horner also accused his former colleague of regularly leaking confidential information to the media, claiming that this behaviour created additional problems for the team.
“It was frustrating that he constantly leaked internal information to the media, such as race strategies, news about the drivers and the team, which caused damage to the team, and we had to put things right.”
The comments illustrate how the tensions between the two men extended beyond personal disagreements and into the day-to-day management of Red Bull’s Formula 1 operation.
Christian Horner tells Laurent Mekies how lucky he is
Christian Horner ended his criticism with a pointed observation about his successor, Laurent Mekies, who took over as Red Bull team principal following his dismissal.
“Laurent doesn’t realise how lucky he is now,” Christian Horner said.
The remark reflected the British manager’s frustration with the internal difficulties he believes he had to navigate during his final years at Red Bull.
With both Christian Horner and Helmut Marko now gone, Laurent Mekies is overseeing a different management structure as the team continues its 2026 campaign and prepares for the future.
Christian Horner targets another Formula 1 role with team ownership
While a Formula 1 return appears unlikely for Helmut Marko given his age, Christian Horner believes his own career in the championship is not necessarily over.
More than a year after leaving Red Bull, the British manager considers himself ready for another chapter in Formula 1. However, he is not interested in simply returning to the paddock as a conventional team principal.
Christian Horner is instead looking for an ambitious project in which he could also acquire an ownership stake, giving him a direct financial interest in the team’s future.
His position suggests that any potential return would depend not only on finding a competitive and ambitious organisation but also on securing a role that extends beyond managing its day-to-day racing activities.
For now, the former Red Bull team principal remains outside Formula 1, while his relationship with Helmut Marko appears to have reached a definitive end.
