Fernando Alonso stayed true to his character at the conclusion of the Abu Dhabi GP, which wrapped up an unexpectedly tough season for Aston Martin. Finishing ninth, just ahead of Oscar Piastri’s McLaren, the two-time world champion spent 2024 far from the successes of the previous year, unable to reach the podium even once (compared to five third places and three seconds in 2023). The disappointing performances were attributed to a difficult-to-drive car that also caused physical issues for the Spaniard.

After the checkered flag in Abu Dhabi, the 43-year-old showed Spanish broadcaster Dazn his left shoulder, wrapped in a large pink bandage. Fernando Alonso had already mentioned the injury over the radio after the Brazilian GP, where he considered retiring due to the intense bouncing of his Aston Martin, which caused shoulder pain: “It’s the car’s fault. With a McLaren, Ferrari, or Mercedes, it’s much less challenging because the car doesn’t bounce and is faster. With ours, you end up injuring your shoulder and dealing with pain for six races. But in the end, you take a pill, the pain goes away, and you keep going.”

Despite the injury, Fernando Alonso emphasized his physical fitness despite his age: “Age has nothing to do with it. When I’m not physically well, people tend to think, ‘Well, he’s 43 years old!’ But once again, at the end of the race, it was like being in *The Walking Dead* (a long-running TV series where characters face hordes of zombies), and I was fine, much fitter than they were. So yes, these are just small injuries you can get, especially when the car doesn’t let you settle comfortably in your seat. But I’ll always give my all, as I’ve done in these last races where we didn’t have any objectives. From the outside, it always seems like someone is waiting for me to grow old, but that day isn’t coming yet. When I start 14th, I aim to finish in the points. When I start 8th, I aim for the podium.
