Before the Abu Dhabi GP, four-time Formula 1 world champion Alain Prost shared his thoughts on the new Netflix series honoring Ayrton Senna:
Alain Prost’s criticism
Here’s what the French former driver had to say: “It bothers me that people feel the need to change history when someone is no longer alive.”
“It’s a great story, and there’s no need to tell things that aren’t true. Ayrton wouldn’t have liked it either [the series, ed.]. It’s false, fiction.”
“There’s no sensitivity anymore; everything is always turned into a commodity. I really don’t like that they’re doing this with Senna’s name. Respect is necessary,” Alain Prost concluded.
After all, no one knew the Brazilian better than Alain Prost. The two shared legendary on-track battles and many personal moments off the track.
Yet, the Netflix series was created in collaboration with Ayrton Senna’s family, suggesting some level of accuracy. However, there might be shortcomings, particularly in how the relationship with his historic rival is portrayed.
In the end, as Alain Prost himself put it, commercial spectacle seems to have won out over sport.
It’s not the first time this has happened—especially in Formula 1—and it probably won’t be the last (unfortunately).
