Toto Wolff, Team Principal of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, has spoken ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, which will be the final race before the Formula 1 summer break. His words reflect both a sense of realism regarding recent underperformance and a desire to bounce back strongly at the Hungaroring.
Mercedes Looking for Redemption in Budapest
The version of Mercedes seen at the Canadian Grand Prix appeared to be a promising glimpse of resurgence—almost a springtime mirage—one that has not been replicated in the summer races that followed. Since that promising result in Montreal, the Brackley-based team has struggled to maintain the same level of performance. George Russell, one of the team’s two drivers, has failed to finish higher than fifth place during the triple-header at the Red Bull Ring, Silverstone, and Spa-Francorchamps. Meanwhile, his young teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli has been unable to add any more points to his tally, due to a combination of performance issues and unfortunate race circumstances.
These underwhelming results have led the Mercedes Formula 1 team to call an emergency technical and strategic meeting at their headquarters in Brackley. The objective was to regroup and reorganize ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, which presents a new opportunity for the team to turn things around. The Hungaroring circuit theoretically plays to the strengths of the W16, especially in low-speed corners and under traction-heavy conditions. If temperatures in Hungary are lower than usual during the weekend, Mercedes could potentially return to a more competitive form. That is precisely what Team Principal Toto Wolff is hoping for, as he previewed the upcoming Grand Prix in Budapest.
Toto Wolff’s Comments on the Hungarian Grand Prix
“Following a difficult weekend in Belgium, we are aiming to be more competitive in Hungary,” said Toto Wolff, speaking ahead of the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix. “Our performance in the recent races has not lived up to the standards we expect from ourselves as a team. We are committed to understanding the reasons behind this and improving the situation over the upcoming weekend.”
The Austrian team boss went on to explain that Mercedes has been working at full pace in the days following the Belgian Grand Prix. The focus has been on optimizing every aspect of the car and operations in order to end the first half of the season on a high note before Formula 1’s mandatory summer shutdown. “The team has worked flat out in the days after Spa to make improvements and aim for a strong result in Budapest before the break,” Wolff added.
Driver Lineup Clarity Emerging for 2026
According to sources within the Mercedes camp, the team is also beginning to solidify its driver plans for the 2026 Formula 1 season. Earlier, Toto Wolff had stated that the team would have clarity on its future lineup around the time of the Belgian Grand Prix. As things stand, George Russell appears to be securely positioned, with a contract renewal reportedly very close to being finalized.
However, the situation is less clear for Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the young Italian driver making his debut season in Formula 1. Antonelli is under growing pressure to deliver results after a string of disappointing performances, marking his first real crisis since joining the sport’s top category. A strong showing in Hungary is now essential for him to restore momentum and reinforce his candidacy for a seat next year.
