With his recent victory at the Belgian Grand Prix held at the historic Spa-Francorchamps circuit, McLaren Formula 1 driver Oscar Piastri has rewritten the record books for Australian motorsport. The win not only extended his lead in the 2025 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship standings over his teammate Lando Norris but also made him the most successful Australian driver in a single F1 season in terms of race victories.
The current season has been nothing short of remarkable for the McLaren F1 Team. The team has been a dominant force throughout the 2025 championship, with both of its drivers consistently delivering top performances. At this stage of the season, Oscar Piastri leads the championship standings, with Lando Norris closely behind in second place. Piastri’s win at Spa marked his eighth career victory in Formula 1, and more importantly, his sixth win of the 2025 season alone—having previously triumphed in the Grands Prix of China, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Miami, and Spain.
This latest win is particularly meaningful not just because it came at one of the most iconic circuits on the F1 calendar, but also because it represents a historic milestone in Australian motorsport. At just 24 years of age, Oscar Piastri has surpassed a record that had stood for more than four decades. The previous benchmark for the most victories in a single Formula 1 season by an Australian driver was five—a record jointly held by two legends of the sport: Alan Jones and Jack Brabham.
Alan Jones achieved his five wins during the 1980 Formula 1 season while driving for Williams. Those victories were crucial in securing his first and only World Championship title. Over the course of his F1 career, Jones won a total of 12 races, 11 of them with the Williams team, which made him the first driver to win a title with the Grove-based outfit. His very first win, however, came with the Shadow team, marking the only Grand Prix victory in that team’s history.
Before Alan Jones, another iconic figure in Australian racing, Jack Brabham, had also managed to claim five victories in a single season. Brabham, a three-time Formula 1 World Champion with titles in 1959, 1960, and 1966, won five races during the 1960 campaign. Remarkably, his 1966 championship triumph came driving for his own team, Brabham—making him the only driver in F1 history to win a World Championship in a car bearing his own name. Across his career, Jack Brabham secured a total of 14 Formula 1 victories.
In more recent years, other prominent Australian drivers such as Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo also delivered memorable performances on the world stage. Mark Webber claimed four race wins in the 2010 season while driving for Red Bull Racing. Daniel Ricciardo, meanwhile, secured three victories in the 2014 season—also with Red Bull. Although both drivers had impressive careers, neither matched the single-season win tally now held by Oscar Piastri.
Oscar Piastri’s breakthrough performance in 2025 not only cements his place in Australian motorsport history but also signals a potential changing of the guard in Formula 1. With several races still remaining in the season, the young McLaren driver has a chance to further extend his record and strengthen his bid for a maiden World Championship title—something no Australian has achieved since Alan Jones in 1980.
