At the Austrian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso delivered a true lesson in Formula 1 racing: the two-time World Champion shone with a flawless strategy and a masterful defensive performance that revitalized the Aston Martin team.
Fernando Alonso finished the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix in seventh place, thanks to a perfectly executed strategy and an impeccable defensive drive. The experienced Spanish driver once again demonstrated all of his extraordinary skills by successfully holding off Gabriel Bortoleto, who was on significantly fresher tires. This result is particularly important during such a challenging season for Aston Martin, which has now decided to shift the majority of its resources toward the 2026 campaign. This strong finish injects much-needed confidence and morale into the British team. Great credit also goes to the pit wall engineers, who devised a one-stop strategy that few others considered viable.
The key challenge was managing tire temperatures effectively, avoiding a sharp drop in performance during the final laps. Mission accomplished for car number 14, which flawlessly executed the race plan. The consistency of Alonso’s race pace, combined with his cool-headedness in critical moments, made all the difference. On a technical track like the Red Bull Ring, every detail can influence the final outcome, and the team delivered when it mattered most.
The battle with his young teammate Gabriel Bortoleto was arguably the most thrilling moment of the race. The Brazilian driver was closing in quickly, but Fernando Alonso, with intelligent defensive driving and by strategically using the arrival of the two McLaren cars, managed to cross the finish line ahead. The two-time World Champion reaffirmed once again that he still has plenty to say in the highest echelon of motorsport. Now, what Alonso truly needs is a car capable of matching his talent, enabling him to unlock his full potential.
And on this front, fans can dare to dream. Behind the scenes of the “Green Car” is none other than Adrian Newey, a legendary British engineer and designer, who is working on the 2026 project with the goal of elevating Aston Martin to Formula 1’s pinnacle.
Alonso’s Words After the Race
“Starting from 11th position, I’m really happy to have finished 7th in Austria. The one-stop strategy worked very well. I was a bit uncertain because of the heat, but in the end, it paid off and the team made the right call. I managed to use the DRS throughout the race and had a bit of luck in the final laps – one more lap would have been too much. It’s nice to end a tough weekend on a positive note, and the team’s determination is clear. Now we take this energy to Silverstone next week.”
