George Russell took full advantage of McLaren’s opening-lap chaos to secure second place in the Austin Sprint Race. The Mercedes driver could hardly believe his eyes when he saw what was unfolding in front of him at Turn 1. Oscar Piastri’s daring move eliminated his teammate and championship rival Lando Norris, as well as Fernando Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg, negating Hulkenberg’s impressive fourth-place qualifying effort. Starting from fifth, Russell immediately found himself in P2, which he maintained across the finish line.
After the race, George Russell was naturally asked about the first-corner incident: “I was on the outside. I saw one car going flat out on the outside and another on the inside. I didn’t get a very clear view. From my perspective, it looked like there were three cars in the space of one, which is obviously impossible.”
Despite claiming second, George Russell wasn’t content to settle. Once the Safety Car returned to the pit lane, the Mercedes driver immediately chased down Max Verstappen’s Red Bull, taking a bold risk in the process. At the hairpin at the end of the straight, Russell attempted a very deep braking maneuver, even though he was still far behind Verstappen.
In that moment, Max Verstappen remained calm and widened his line to avoid any collision. George Russell’s take on the risky episode was clear: “I know Max doesn’t give you many opportunities. I saw half an opening, so I went for it. I was probably too far away, but I’m happy I tried. Second place is better than we could have expected, and those are good points.”
